S/he takes two shots to the head, but somehow manages to survive. Oh, and it has my boy Nicky Valentine, the GOAT.The Courier was just a regular schmuck trying to make a living delivering packages before being ambushed by Benny and several Great Khans while delivering a particular package: a Platinum Chip.

You could build a fortress, but if your settlement defense was too good, the game would never attack it as a result - so you never got to see your perfectly designed abattoir in action. The un-modded build limit was really restrictive, and the settlement behaviour was really simplistic. I liked the settlement idea but it was really half-baked. Downtown Boston can be really impressive as far as detail and the verticality of some of the skyscrapers. The Institute and Railroad are interesting, despite how stupid I think some of the choices are late in the game (where you're basically forced to pick sides that really seem like they shouldn't be so irreconcilable in the first place). The Brotherhood showing up in the Prydwen is awesome. I think FO4 hit a point where that trademark jank just wasn't charming and cute any more, and people were getting rightly frustrated that it wasn't being cleaned up.Īside from that, there's lots to love about Fallout 4, just like Fallout 3 and New Vegas. The things I hate about Fallout 4 are 1) the entire stupid central story about you looking for your son (who the player is given no reason to give the faintest fuck about because you see him as a baby for all of 45 seconds), and 2) the fact that it features a lot of the same Bethesda jank and bugs that had been persisting for over a decade at that point, because of that bodged together ancient engine. If you like settlements, check out the SIM Settlements mods, Place Everywhere, and Scrap Everything. And while it should always remain optional (one of the reasons it was hated so much in FO4 was because of the forced and boring introduction imo) it’s great that you can play the entire game as a pacifist who just wants to rebuild the commonwealth.

The settlement system is a game changer there, allowing for real change in the world, with the potential for so many dynamic events if they develop it (trade routes turning into roads, drawing the attention of raiders, necessitating the construction of outposts etc which may develop into their own settlements over time, almost limitless possibility here). Bethesda games have always let you play through their worlds in different and entirely optional ways to your friends (stealth, melee, range, magic, power armour etc) and engage with different factions to your friends, but the world itself has always remained identical outside of scripted options like Fallout 3’s Megaton. That my commonwealth could look completely different to everyone else’s was a big moment for me, and is a clear step in the right direction.

Most favourite because the settlement system was crack for me, creating a fully robust pacifist playstyle that let me engage with and shape the entire map. Least favourite because of the weaker writing/story, the forced narrative of finding your son, and the dialogue system. It’s both my most and least favourite BGS game. Yeah, love/hate relationship with this game for sure.
#FALLOUT NEW VEGAS PACIFIST BUILD PATCH#
In terms of game modding, I'm only using the unofficial patch but if you can recommend me some good UI/QOL mods, I would appreciate it. That said, overall it's still a rather enjoyable game once you get past the uninteresting few starting hours and accept it's not as great as the predecessors but still a good Bethesda game. The lack of a NV style morality system is a bit of a negative in my view, as it removes any incentive to do some deeper character role-playing, so I just default to being a goody two-shoes, although I did notice that there is some sort of reputation system for companions.

Strangely I kinda miss the weapon degradation system from FO3/New Vegas but I guess the improved weapon modding makes up for it. While not as good of an RPG as the games before it, the shooting being so much improved really keeps you more interested in just walking around discovering the world and getting into the occasional shootout. However, once you get to Diamond City/Vault 85 and start doing their quests is when the writing and characters really pick up and get engaging. Before that it's really kind of slow to pick up and the only high point is grabbing the power armor in Concord to kill the Deathclaw.

I had already played it a bit on the PS4 but it's really a much better experience on PC at 60fps.Īnyway, this game doesn't really start getting good until you reach Diamond City and Vault 85. I recently grabbed Fallout 4 on the Steam sale and have been playing it whenever I can since then.
